Be Safe in the Sun – Dermatology Specialists Hosts Free
Cancer Screening Event

SARASOTA, FL – April 30, 2013 – May is National Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month, and Dermatology Specialists – a world-class skin care provider with locations in both Sarasota and Lakewood Ranch – is hosting a free skin cancer screening event to encourage early detection and bring the dangers of skin cancer into focus. The event will be held at 3325 S Tamiami Trail, Suite 200 – the practice’s Sarasota office – on Saturday, May 18 from 9am to 4pm.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) recommends a detailed annual skin examination by a dermatologist in addition to monthly self-checks. Screenings at the event are entirely free, open to the public, and everyone in the family is welcome. Dermatology Specialists asks for those planning to attend for a free screening to first schedule an appointment, but walk-ins are also accepted. Light refreshments will be served, and local radio personality Lulu from 106.5 WCTQ will be broadcasting live with music, giveaways, prizes and more.

The warmer temperatures of spring and summer are approaching, resulting in greater exposure to the harmful, skin-damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays that can cause skin cancer. Those with a family history of skin cancer, are fair skinned, sunburn easily or spend a lot of time outdoors are at a much higher risk of developing the disease, and between 40% and 50% of Americans who live to age 65 will have skin cancer at least once. “This event was created as a fun way to raise awareness about skin cancer and the importance of proper sun protection before heading outdoors this summer,” said Dr. Emily Arsenault, MD, FAAD, lead physician with Dermatology Specialists. “Our goal is to educate everyone about proper skin protection, including the need for annual examinations. Clinical research has shown that timely examinations help detect any issues early enough to provide necessary treatment and can help save lives.”

The ACS estimates that over one million cases of non-melanoma cancers go unreported annually, making skin cancer the most common form of cancer in the United States. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime, and nearly 800,000 are living with a history of melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer. There are over 65,000 new cases of melanoma reported each year, with roughly 11,000 resulting in death. About 90% of non-melanoma skin cancers and 65% of melanoma cases are associated with exposure to UV radiation from the sun – Florida residents are particularly at risk due to year-round exposure.

But there is good news: Skin cancer is also one of the most preventable forms of cancer, and it is also very treatable with over a 90% survival rate if caught early. The earlier you can catch it, the better, as the survival rate falls to 15% for those with advanced disease. Early detection is an area of expertise for the professionals at Dermatology Specialists, who are uniquely equipped with Dermatoscope-guided exams, the industry’s most advanced detector of skin cancers. Dermatoscopy greatly improves the accuracy of diagnosis compared to simple visual inspections with the naked eye, allowing the team of certified dermatologists to identify and create comprehensive solutions to treat these potentially life-threatening cancers. Dermatology Specialists is a leader in treating skin cancer, particularly melanoma.
