ASO Corporation Holds Graphic Design Contest For Students Of Ringling College Of Art And Design, A Top US Arts College
Winning Bandage Concept to Come to Life Exclusively at Walmart Stores Nationwide
SARASOTA, Florida – July 2, 2013 – Sarasota-based ASO Corporation, one of the world's largest producers of adhesive bandages and suppliers of wound care products, recently launched a design contest for the students of Ringling College of Art and Design to create the look for a new line of decorative bandages. The winning concepts have been selected and will be manufactured locally by ASO and featured in Walmart stores. Currently, ASO has licensed bandages with Peanuts, Despicable Me, Garfield, Shrek and Rovio’s Angry Birds.
ASO further reinforced its longstanding, steadfast commitment to the community by calling on the students of the Ringling College of Art & Design to help expand its decorative product line. “There is such an incredible pool of talent right here in our own backyard in Sarasota,” said Katrin Pfitzenreiter, ASO Bandage Category Manager. “We are proud to introduce the exceptional work of these students to the nation through our ongoing relationship with Walmart stores.”
The contest was open to all current students who were at least eighteen years old. Their designs had to appeal to parents and children in one of two demographic categories: boys aged 4-9 years or girls aged 4-9 years. Each entry included a box design, bandage strip designs and appropriate communication with box art highlighting the designed product. Aside from reaching those target audiences, students were allowed complete artistic freedom with their work. "We were thrilled to have the opportunity to produce some fresh ideas for ASO’s line of bandages,” said Kimberly Elam, head of Ringling’s graphic design department. “Knowing their creative concepts had the potential to be seen on store shelves was truly an inspirational experience for our students."
Fourteen students participated in the contest, submitting seven designs for the girls and 10 for the boys. The designers of the top three concepts for each demographic were invited to the ASO facility, where they were given a tour, learned about how the products were made, and pitched their design to an ASO management team. Finalists were evaluated on their effectiveness in presentation and ability to communicate the design’s artistic appeal. Prizes were awarded for the top three designs of the two categories as follows: First Place, $1,500 cash; Second Place, $500 cash; Third Place, $70 gift card for dinner for two. The overall winning designers of the contest were Kristina Oliva and Jessica Marinello, whose names will be included on the bandage box along with recognition to Ringling College of Art and Design intended for launch at Walmart in 2013.
