Creativity gets all the attention when it comes to delivering quality work for our clients. But creativity without a plan of action is just an idea drifting around without a direction – plain and simple. That’s where I come in, behind the scenes, as the Executive Vice President of Agency Operations.

Joan Burnell: How the Shop Mom Moves Your Project to the Finish Line

If you ask me, my role in project management is a lot like being a mom – the “shop mom,” if you read my Takeover e-blast this month! My “kids” are the creative team, pushing ideas to be outside-the-box and the best they can be. But without “mom,” driving the project forward, from scheduling the initial briefing with the team to setting dates for the first draft, ensuring client-requested edits are made and sending its final form out the door, those ideas don’t reach the finish line. For over 25 years, I’ve been in this industry, and one thing I know without a shadow of a doubt: project management keeps everything moving.

That’s the thousand-foot view of what I bring to the table at Grapevine, working with the most creative team on the Suncoast. I don’t write the script, I don’t finance the video, and I don’t always get the credit. But without someone overseeing all the moving parts (think schedules, budgets, logistics, and execution), our projects would go over budget, off-track, or be stuck in development for eternity.

Project Management: It’s a Craft

Project management at an advertising agency is a craft that our clients don’t see but can definitely come to appreciate. Here’s why we (and you, as a client) need it:

  • Happy Clients: As an award-winning agency, we have one goal – to give you high-quality work that we believe will best serve your brand. Building trust, loyalty and long-lasting partnerships with people and companies we do business with starts by delivering projects on time and on budget.
  • Efficiency and Productivity: When production runs smoothly, our team can focus on what they do best – being creative. That may include establishing deadlines, setting realistic expectations and making sure we have all the materials needed to move forward with our best ideas.
  • Creative Integrity: Production ensures that what we execute stays true to the original concept – no shortcuts, no compromises. We’re not in the business of settling.
  • Brand Reputation: Well-executed campaigns don’t just make our clients look good – they make us look good, too. We’re progressing their brand (and ours) with what we produce, and that requires a process that we adhere to, and I oversee!

Did I Mention the Challenges?

Production management isn’t for the faint of heart. Here are some of the biggest challenges I navigate daily that you may not see:

  • Tight Deadlines: We’re often working with incredibly fast turnaround times and balancing multiple projects – all with different needs.
  • Budget Constraints: Creativity is limitless; budgets are not.
  • Complex Logistics: Coordinating multiple teams, vendors, and locations takes serious planning.

At the end of the day, production management is about problem-solving, teamwork, and making things happen. It’s not always glamorous, but when you see a campaign come to life – and know you played a role in making it work – it’s worth every spreadsheet, phone call and meeting. It takes the entire shop to create results and I’m proud to be the “mom!”
