Meals on Wheels of Sarasota Kicks Off Annual March for Meals

Sarasota, Florida – Every year, Meals on Wheels organizations across the nation unite for a fundraising campaign, “March for Meals” to benefit local programs. Meals on Wheels of Sarasota will host a breakfast event on Friday, February 28 at 7:30 a.m. to kick off the campaign to support homebound seniors, veterans, children and families in need in Sarasota. Dr. Fiona Crawford, President and CEO of The Roskamp Institute and Dr. Sheri Weinstein, founder and CEO of Sarasota Wellness & Internal Medicine, will speak to a sold-out crowd at the Sarasota Yacht Club about the impact of nutrition on the body and mind.

“We serve a largely silent group of Sarasotans, homebound – isolated – hungry, and are thrilled that Drs. Fiona Crawford and Sheri Weinstein are taking time to address the importance of nutrition, thereby giving voice to our mission,” said Marjorie Broughton, executive director of Meals on Wheels of Sarasota. “The event will raise awareness and funds to feed our homebound neighbors struggling with hunger by ensuring that we continue delivering heart healthy meals throughout our community.”

Dr. Crawford’s Ph.D. research was carried out in London as a member of the team that identified the first genetic causes of Alzheimer’s disease. Relocating to Florida in 1992, she discovered the “Swedish” mutation, which has been used in innumerable laboratory models of Alzheimer’s worldwide. She co-founded The Roskamp Institute, which became a stand-alone research institute in Sarasota in 2003 and is now home to a staff of more than 60 scientists, clinicians, graduate students and research assistants, focused on identifying novel treatments for neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders.

Dr. Weinstein has been affiliated with Sarasota Memorial Hospital since 2001. In addition to awards and honors, she serves on a variety of advisory boards in Sarasota and the Tampa Bay area, including the Medical Quality Improvement Board, the Blood Usage Committee, and the Suncoast Blood Bank Medical Advisory Board. Dr. Weinstein is an All-American triathlete, competing successfully with a multitude of awards from 2004 to 2011 and continuing to compete in 2020.
