As Director of Web Development, I never stop learning and growing. Over the years, I have found that life has a way of teaching us lessons when we least expect them – and I think of those lessons often in what I accomplish for clients here at Grapevine. I learned early on that wisdom can come from almost anyone or anything. In every experience, interaction and failure, there’s a lesson to be learned. If there’s one piece of advice I can give, it’s to embrace the unexpected and remain open to learning from every corner of your life.

Here are a few of the things I have learned from unexpected places that have shaped me not only as a web developer but as a person.

Jigsaw Puzzles: Puzzles can test the mind in incredible ways. They taught me the importance of patience and pattern recognition. I learned how to slow down, take my time to sort out the pieces and organize them. It showed me how to solve complex problems one piece at a time until the picture is clear.

Dungeons & Dragons: The game taught me the value of teamwork, dedication and goal setting. It takes a lot of effort to organize and synchronize the schedules of a half dozen people to get together around a table for a game that takes hours to play. To get the most out of the game, all the players have to communicate effectively, cooperate, set common goals and sacrifice for the group. If you do it well, you get to enjoy a game that lasts years while building friendships and memories that last a lifetime.

My Brother: He taught me not to take family and friends for granted. You never know what the future holds. Things can change in an instant and someone you thought would always be there can be gone forever.

The Army: My time in the Army taught me invaluable lessons about leadership – both good and bad. I witnessed firsthand how inspiring leaders command respect and how toxic leadership can shatter lives. I learned to leverage strengths while mitigating weaknesses, discovering that effective teamwork and leadership serve as powerful force multipliers capable of transforming lives and changing the world.

A 12-Year-Old Girl: A young lady taught me humility by showing that there will always be someone who is smarter, faster, stronger, richer and better looking. Instead of comparing yourself to others, the real goal is to become the best version of yourself.

Many Broken Toys: A childhood filled with broken toys taught me the value of caring for the things I love. Putting in the time to maintenance your possessions and relationships will improve your life, both financially and emotionally.

A Newborn Baby: A newborn baby taught me the true meaning of unconditional love, the importance of trust and the value of a reliable partner.
