Philanthropic initiative to raise funds, awareness for local non-profits
In support of its commitment to making membership matter, the Sarasota Yacht Club is pleased to announce a new initiative to connect members with local non-profit organizations throughout the Suncoast. On January 8, 2020, SYC Cares, the Club’s philanthropic arm, sponsored “Community Connections,” an informational gathering to help club members learn more about the missions of organizations that serve the needs of the community.
“Sarasota Yacht Club has a proud history of community service and support for an array of programs and organizations,” said SYC Cares Chairperson Jane Thompson. “’Community Connections’ lets us show our collective support for those that strengthen our community.” The non-profit organizations attending the event were selected from a recent survey of yacht club members. Participants included All Faiths Food Bank, Boys and Girls Clubs of Sarasota County, Children First, Child Protection Center, Girls Inc. of Sarasota County, Humane Society of Sarasota County, Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium, Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center, Salvation Army and Senior Friendship Centers.
In addition to learning about the participating non-profits, event attendees selected their top organizations that resonated most. Overall results will be used to distribute grant applications to the top five organizations. The applications will include a financial and volunteer component. All Sarasota Yacht Club members will have the opportunity to read summaries of the completed grants and then vote for the top two organizations, which will receive grants from the Club in the spring.
“As individuals, we are all philanthropic in our own ways,” said Julie McMullen, “Community Connections” event chair. “But when we combine forces, we’re bigger, better and we can achieve a greater impact.”
